St. Clair Business Owners Need to Speak Up

To The Editor:
I am a small-business owner in St. Clair. I run a resale shop on Main Street. Since the city has decided we can no longer place items on our sidewalks to draw people into our store, our sales have decreased tremendously.

All other neighboring towns allow businesses to place items on sidewalks. What is the purpose for St. Clair to target resale shops? Are you trying to run business out of St. Clair? Do you want businesses to close and more families having no alternative except to receive public assistance to support their families?

The ordinance says "No items on any sidewalk, street, parking lot, alley or cul-de-sac."

If that is the case, St. Clair needs to get some workers out to remove the benches on Main Street. They are on the sidewalk. If we have to remove our items, they need to remove the benches.

An auto repair shop has vehicles parked on the sidewalk, numerous homes and businesses have trash cans sitting on the sidewalks. There are newspaper vending machines at numerous shops. At the corner of Springfield and Main, there are two huge soda machines on the sidewalk. On Main Street there is a shop with three trash cans sitting on the sidewalk outside their front entrance. There are numerous homes with basketball hoops for their children on the sidewalk, large flowerpots at several places on the sidewalks.

I am asking the city aldermen to change this ordinance. It would be in the best interest for all of St. Clair.

I have no problem following the rules of the ordinance, but if you expect me to follow it, then you should expect all to follow it as well.

I am sure that the people of St. Clair did not know about this ordinance, but it's there and it affects all of us.

Please speak out and help us stop this. We do not live in some communist country with dictators ordering us around. This is the United States of America. None of us homeowners or business owners are doing anything wrong. Remember these are our elected officials. We can make a change.

I totally agree
I totally agree that it's unheard of to have to remove items from the sidewalks. Resale shops are a great alternativefor families that want nice things for their loved ones, but can't afford it. It allows the middle class people to have luxuries(even as small as used clothes or furniture) without the government paying for it.
