The decision to inoculate all students and family members against seasonal flu was made after Anita Arnette, secondary school health coordinator, approached administrators with the idea.
Arnette and Barb Heger, elementary health coordinator, worked with Children's Hospital to put the program together. The hospital will send nurses to distribute the shots.
Arnette and Heger will organize distribution of the shots, which will be provided at no cost. Shots will be provided at Meramec Valley Middle School, 195 Indian Pride Drive, Saturday, Oct. 17.
No reservations are required. Shots will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis.
"We chose Saturday because of the availability of a school building to get the students and parents in," George said. "Most parents work and have a tough time getting into the school building during school hours."
The superintendent stressed that the free injections are not for H1N1, also known as swine flu.
"This is the seasonal flu shot," George said. "When the H1N1 injections become available we may offer them in the same way."
The decision to offer the seasonal flu shots to everyone in the district was made because of the presence of two different flu strains out there.
"There will in all likelihood be more flu this winter than in previous years," he said. "We hope to prevent as much of it as we can."
