A 28-year-old Warrenton man is facing felony charges for allegedly stabbing another Warrenton man Sunday evening.

Warrenton Police Chief Davis Bernard said Brian Marshall Jones stabbed a man three times during an incident Sunday night around 8:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Bedford Drive.

Jones tried to flee the scene on foot but was taken into custody quickly by police. He is currently being held in the Warren County Jail.

Charges for first-degree assault and armed criminal action have been filed by prosecutors. A $500,000 cash-only bond has been set.

Police identified the victim as Brett Adams, also of Warrenton. Adams was airlifted to St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur with stab wounds to the right abdomen, left shoulder and neck, Bernard said. Adams underwent emergency surgery for his injuries following the assault, according to a probable cause statement filed with the court.

On Tuesday afternoon, Bernard said Adams remains in critical condition.

Adams' last known address was in the 20000 block of Oak Ridge, while Jones's residence is believed to be in the Bellaire Trailer Park in Warrenton, according to court records.

Witnesses told police a white man walked up to Adams and stabbed him three times.

The blade from the knife used in the attack broke off in Adams's body, according to the police statement. Police located the remaining portion of the knife next to Adams in the driveway.

Bernard declined to release more details, saying detectives are currently investigating the case.

"We want to do as thorough an investigation as possible. That way no stone is unturned," Bernard said.

Jones told officers he had thoughts of hurting Adams for approximately one week, according to the statement. Jones said he confronted Adams and began stabbing him once Adams turned away from him. Bernard declined to say what was the motivation for the attack or the dispute between the two men.

"We have to establish that relationship," Bernard said.

Jones is on probation after being convicted of stealing a motor vehicle in 2005. He also served a nine-month prison sentence in 2005 for third-degree domestic assault, according to court records.

Sunday's stabbing was the third to occur in Warrenton in 2009 and the second in a week's time. On June 28, Serena E. Sheppard of Warrenton allegedly stabbed a male acquaintance in the 23000 block of Donna Maria around 8:30 a.m. She will be arraigned July 20 on a felony charge of second-degree domestic assault.

In the early-morning hours of Jan. 1, a man in his mid-20s was stabbed in the 300 block of South Highway 47 by another male. No charges were ever filed in the incident.
