Franklin County Felony Roundup Nets 54 Suspects

By Thursday afternoon law enforcement officers had taken 54 people into custody in one of the largest felony arrest roundups in the county's history.

The operation began at 6 a.m. Tuesday and by that evening 40 suspects were in custody. Others were arrested Wednesday and Thursday.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service, as part of "Operation Falcon," assisted local police in arresting suspects charged in county grand jury indictments and on outstanding felony warrants.

In some cases, indictments were served on suspects who are in the Missouri Department of Corrections (MDC) on prior convictions.

Some were taken into custody in other counties as well as in the states of Texas and Arkansas, according to Detective Sgt. Jason Grellner, commander of the Franklin County Narcotics Enforcement Unit.

About 45 police officers from the sheriff's department and municipal police agencies took part in the roundup assisted by U.S. marshals and agents with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. Local police agencies included Washington, Union, Pacific, Sullivan, St. Clair and New Haven.

"The operation went very smoothly. We had great cooperation from everyone," Grellner commented. "A special thanks to the county jail staff. They did an awesome job processing all these suspects."

The jail brought in extra staff to book prisoners and provided a van for shuttling suspects to the jail after they were arrested, he noted.

The majority of the suspects were arrested on drug trafficking and possession charges but some had outstanding felony charges for other offenses and were picked up at the request of the prosecuting attorney's office, Grellner explained.

Many of the narcotics cases involved suspects who sold drugs to an undercover officer attached to the task force.

"Detective Eric Hovis did a great job," Grellner said. "He worked for a number of months making these cases."

In order to obtain an indictment, an undercover officer must make at least three drug "buys" from a suspect, Grellner noted. Some of the offenses date back 18 months.

Hovis has ended his undercover role, Grellner said, but will continue working as a task force member.

Following are the suspects taken into custody and the charges. In some cases the age of the suspect was not available.

Some of the defendants are charged with multiple offenses but only one charge is listed.
