Hitting the road for the longest trip of the year so far, the Washington Post 218 Junior Legion team headed to Springfield Friday.

Washington is 12-8 overall and 7-1 in Ninth District games.

Post 218 was scheduled to play Glendale at Willard Friday at 4:30 p.m. Win or lose, Washington will play either Nixa or Sedalia in the second round. The action at Willard is an eight-team bracket and play there concludes Saturday.

Teams will play again Sunday against teams playing in another eight-team bracket at Kickapoo. Each team will play the club which finished in the corresponding place from the other bracket for overall placement.

Post 218 played two Ninth District rivals this week in nonleague games, beating Troy, but losing to West.

"We decided to use the two nondistrict games this week against West and Troy to get ready for the Springfield Tournament," said Post 218 Manager Mike Gardner. "That meant that we were going to try and get all the pitchers at least an inning or two."

On Thursday, Washington won at Troy, 5-1.

Washington scored four times in the top of the fourth. Troy scored in the bottom of the sixth, but Washington added another run in the top of the seventh.

"Because we ended up using so many pitchers in our game against West, we thought we might have to use some position players to pitch a couple of innings against Troy," Gardner said. "Fortunately Mike McGilvray came out and pitched a great game going 6.1 innings and only allowing one run on a couple of hits. Matt Strothkamp came in an was able to get the last couple of outs."

Cody Gardner had two hits and two RBIs. Mike Gardner also praised Mic Fox, Trent Leimkuehler, Dylan Bielicke, Alex Piontek, Austin Peirick, Cody Coffman and Nathan Aholt for their offensive contributions.

On Tuesday, Washington lost in a nonleague slugfest against West, 15-11.

Washington scored first with a run in the bottom of the first. West tied it in the top of the second.

West scored four runs in the fourth, but Washington came back with seven in the bottom of that frame and added three more in the fifth to go up, 11-5.

West scored three runs in the sixth and seven in the seventh to go ahead to stay.

"Austin Peirick started on the mound and pitched a solid two innings," said Gardner. "And for the most part we played pretty good game against West until our last few pitchers could not seem to get a grip on the ball. We were actually one strike from winning the game. The field was really wet and we tried to keep dry baseballs in the game. West just did a much better job handling the conditions."

Gardner said Alex Piontek had two hits and also praised the offensive efforts of Cody Gardner, McGilvray, Fox, DJ Smith, Leimkuehler and Brett Backhaus.
