Washington emerged with a 5-0 victory.
"Cody pitched another great game," Mike Gardner said. "He again pitched a complete game shutout for the third time this year. Trent Leimkuehler (who also played in the Senior Legion game) made a nice catch in left field to help preserve the shutout."
Gardner said everything came together for Washington, which ended a two-game losing streak in the game.
"Fortunately we played good defense, had some very timely hitting, executed a couple of hit-and-runs, and even bunted home a run on a safety squeeze," Gardner said. "Chris Jackson really had a good day at the plate with three RBIs with one on a safety squeeze, one a sacrifice fly, and the last one on a double to right center."
North
Post 218 continued the success against Ninth District teams Sunday, drilling the North Knights, 11-0.
"Against North we were really aggressive and hit the ball hard," Gardner said. "We had a lot of baserunners and even though we had a couple of kids thrown out at the plate I really liked how aggressive we were. Mike McGilvray and Cody Gardner were the hitting stars of the game. Each had a couple of hits and Cody had 3 RBIs."
Washington pitched Alex Piontek and he was able to shut down the Knights in the contest.
"Alex Piontek pitched another great game for us," Mike Gardner said. "He seemed really strong and was throwing strikes. We again played good defense and limited their scoring opportunities."
Anheuser-Busch
On Friday, Washington dropped a 12-0 decision to Anheuser-Busch at Ronsick Field. The game was called official after five innings.
Post 218 was limited to a pair of doubles with Brett Backhaus and Chris Jackson getting the hits.
Backhaus drew a walk and was the only Washington batter to reach base twice.
Brendan Elbert took the loss, going three innings. He allowed six runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks. He struck out two.
Mic Fox pitched two innings, allowing six runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks. He struck out four.
"Once again we came out flat for a nondistrict game and it really showed," Gardner said. "Anheuser-Busch is a very good program and they took full advantage of our indifference and lack of focus. After the game we discussed how hard it is to play at a high level if you are not prepared to do so mentally. I think that our kids were embarrassed enough by the score that we will be ready to play every game the remainder of the year."
