Washington Swimmers Top Pacific in Opener

Franklin County teams Washington and Pacific faced each other Saturday in a competitive meet for the first time since both clubs moved over from the old Suburban Swim League in Washington.

And the host side won the Gateway Swimming and Diving Conference event, 384-109.



There were some strange and interesting happenings in the meet.

Officials assigned to the meet never arrived, so Washington Swim Team representatives Ximena Kriete and Jamie Ince worked to start the races and judge the strokes.

For the first time in years, the teams competed in the individual medley event at the Washington pool. Due to the extreme length at Washington, that meant swimmers competed in 200-yard individual medley events.

In the individual medley events, winners from Washington were Cassandra Halsted, Michael Matthews, Sydney Zupan, Max Blackmur and Danielle Getsee.

Pacific's winner was Nick Silistria.

Washington's second-place finishers were Olivia Haddox and Jarrod Smith.

Pacific's second-place finishers were Alissa Green, Zach Anthony, John Constant and Sarah Milligan.

Washington's third-place swimmers were Ashley Holdmeier, Michael Finck, Natalie Himmelberg and Christopher Holland.

Washington led 35-17 at the conclusion of the individual medley races.

In the freestyle races (which scored team points), Washington's winners were Avery Lackey, Ryan Hoerstkamp, Hannah Struckhoff, Robert Halsted, Sarah Eckelkamp, Connor Kriete, Martha Noelker, Squire Holt, Sydney Zupan, Sam Kleekamp and Corinne Halsted.

Pacific's winner was Nick Silistria.

Second-place finishers from Washington were Claire Ayers, Conor Draves, Caroline Zupan, Nick Sikes, David Meyers, Hannah Scheffer and Bryce Neuberger.

Finishing second from Pacific were Elizabeth Wamsley, Jacob Savage, Melissa Silistria and Ricky Meyers.

Washington's third-place swimmers were Olivia Smith, Louie Eckelkamp, Alyssa Blomberg, Jack Cundiff and Allison Unnerstall.

Pacific's third-place swimmers were Gabrielle Mattli, Ted Toney, Ryan Sauvage, Maggie Donnelly, John Constant, Taylor Creamer and Andrew Ludwig.

Washington led 114-40 at the conclusion of the freestyle races.

In the breaststroke races, Washington's winners were Anna Eckelkamp, Matthew Sinnott, Bonnie Eckelkamp, Connor Kriete, Squire Holt, Hannah Scheffer, Dorian Knight, Danielle Getsee and Jarrod Smith.

Taking first for Pacific was Alissa Green.

Washington's second-place swimmers were Alyssa Blomberg, Olivia Smith, Matthew Hoemann, Kayla Duffy, Jacob Smith, Emily Grahl and Tommy Ruether.

Pacific's second-place finishers were Maddie King, Taylor Creamer and Thomas Mruzik.

Washington's third-place swimmers were Jack Cundiff, Olivia Haddox and Corinne Halsted.

Taking third for Pacific were Lexi Delmain, Nick Wamsley, Alex Vogel and Forrest Nettles.

After the breaststroke event, Washington led, 183-58.

In the freestyle relay races:

* Boys 6-Under was won by Pacific;

* Girls 7-8 was won by Washington;

* Boys 7-8 was won by Washington;

* Girls 9-10 was won by Washington;

* Boys 9-10 was won by Washington;

* Girls 11-12 was won by Washington;

* Boys 11-12 was won by Washington;

* Girls 13-14 was won by Washington;

* Boys 13-14 was won by Washington;

* Girls 15-18 was won by Pacific; and

* Boys 15-18 was won by Pacific.

After the freestyle relay event, Washington held a 207-67 lead.

In the backstroke races, Washington's winners were Avery Lackey, Ryan Hoerstkamp, Hannah Struckhoff, Robert Halsted, Lily VanBiljon, Matthew Hoemann, Emily Moreland, Michael Matthews, Allison Unnerstall, Sam Kleekamp and Natalie Himmelberg.

Winning from Pacific was Michael Broome.

Second-place swimmers from Washington were Spencer Coates, Lily Harrell, Louie Eckelkamp, Sarah Eckelkamp, Nick Sikes, Jordan Kriete, Griffen Scheel, Abi Bell, Max Blackmur and Rachel Beckerman.

Taking second from Pacific was Elizabeth Wamsley.

Washington's third-place swimmers were Olivia Smith, Matthew Sinnott, Caroline Zupan, Martha Noelker, Jack Cundiff, Haley Fortune, Matthew Zupan and Emma Noelker.

Pacific's third-place swimmers were Gabrielle Mattli and Ryan Sauvage.

At the close of the backstroke races, Washington led, 295-83.

The final individual stroke was the butterfly. Washington's winners were Hannah Struckhoff, Robert Halsted, Caroline Zupan, Matthew Hoemann, Michael Matthews, Sydney Zupan and Max Blackmur.

Pacific's winners were Elizabeth Wamsley, Alissa Green and Melissa Silistria.

Finishing second from Washington were Anna Eckelkamp, Louie Eckelkamp, Sarah Eckelkamp, Connor Kriete, Martha Noelker and Cassandra Halsted.

Pacific's second-place swimmers were John Constant, Sarah Milligan and Michael Broome.

Taking third from Washington were Claire Ayers, Conor Draves, Lily VanBiljon, Nick Sikes, Haley Fortune, Tommy Ruether, Corinne Halsted and Jarrod Smith.

Pacific's third-place swimmers were Bella Sauvage and I. Kaseliaskas.

Heading into the medley relay races, Washington led, 354-109.

Washington won all 10 medley relay races.
