She and her husband, Harold Sater, moved to Pacific in 1971. She began teaching language arts at the building that is now known as the Community School.
Throughout her life, she would continue her education, earning a variety of certifications and eventually her master's degree from Washington University.
Sater was employed by the Meramec Valley School District for 33 years. In addition to being a classroom teacher, she was a reading specialist and then a psychological examiner.
After retiring from the district in 2006, she worked for the St. Louis Public School District and taught educational classes at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Sater had many interests including cooking, gardening, handwork, watercolor, folk art, stained glass, traveling and collecting antiques. She earned her "15 minutes of fame" with her appearance on the Antiques Roadshow.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed working with children, particularly those with special needs.
Her children described her as a person who never stopped taking on new challenges, never stopped learning, and never stopped loving those who meant so much to her.
