The St. Clair Board of Aldermen Monday approved an ordinance hiring a new engineering firm for the city.

The bill authorized the city administrator to enter into a professional services agreement with George Butler and Associates, O'Fallon.

The city set out earlier this year to evaluate its engineering services. Officials sought requests for qualifications (RFQs).

After receiving several RFQs from engineering firms, including current provider C. M. Archer, the city evaluated the submissions.

City Administrator Jim Arndt, Mayor Ron Blum and Public Works Director Butch Terry served as the review committee.

The committee came up with a system for each member to independently evaluate each application and score it based on the city's needs.

George Butler Associates was found to be the best qualified of the firms which submitted RFQs.

The city will start a 60-day termination period with C.M. Archer.

George Butler and Associates will perform the following tasks for the city: * Review applications for development projects;

* Review and approve final development projects;

* Serve as city's representative for public and private improvements on development projects;

* Review commercial and industrial building plans;

* Perform comprehensive plan or master planning services for the city; * Initial inventories and set-up of mapping;

* Set up of new zoning, building, land subdivision, construction, infrastructure, codes, regulations, calendars and procedures as needed;

* Plan and solicit bids for public construction;

* Attend city meetings as directed by city officials;

* Prepare other engineering documents as needed.
