Lady Jays to State in Five Events

Washington kept its track and field season alive in five girls events during competition last Saturday.

Competing in the Class 4 Sectional 3 meet at Lebanon High School, Washington's girls advanced in five events while the season came to an end for the boys.

The top four finishers in each sectional event advanced to the state meet, which takes place Friday and Saturday at Lincoln University in Jefferson City beginning at 11 a.m.

Leading the Lady Jays was Anna Holtermann, who qualified for state in two individual events.

Holtermann tied for second place in the high jump, clearing 5-3, and was third in the long jump with a leap of 16-5.

"Anna had another great meet," said Washington Coach Mike Olszowka. "Her timing is still a bit off, but it's coming around."

Jenna Clayton broke the school record in the 100-meter dash, finishing third in a time of 12.6.

"Jenna finally broke the school record and in doing so, she shattered it," Olszowka said. "She is coming on strong at the right point of the season."

Molly Behr also moved on by placing third in the 800-meter run in 2:19, a personal record.

"Molly ran a great 800 meters and established a new PR," Olszowka said. "It was eye-opening for her to see a couple of girls take off like they did, but she has time to learn from it."

The Lady Jays' 3,200-meter relay team finished second in 9:42. Running were Lauren Guasto, Celia Venezia, Rebecca Brown and Behr.

"The 4x8 did what they had to do to survive," Olszowka said. "They got through sectionals, which gives them time to get their strength back."

Brown finished fifth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:19 and seventh in the 3,200-meter run in 11:49.

"Rebecca ran tough. We had a horrible week with the distance kids," Olszowka said. "On Monday, all four of them were sick. We got them to the doctors and we were recovering, and then Becca got bit again on Wednesday night and was violently sick through Thursday. She wanted to go, but she just didn't have any gas."

Venezia placed seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:44.

"Celia ran a great 500 meters. She just ran out of juice," Olszowka said. "Celia has been fighting injuries for about three weeks. She's a great competitor. I believe she gives us everything she has every time she races."

The 400-meter relay team of Patsi Huebner, Alaina Arnold, Hannah Seitter and Clayton were disqualified after losing control of the baton.

"We lost the baton on the third exchange," Olszowka said. "We lost our only baton of the season. It's just the nature of a sprint relay."

The Blue Jays' lone competitor was Dennis Moore, who finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 43-8.

"Dennis missed a state qualification by one inch," Olszowka said. "Dennis had a great year with great improvements. We're looking forward to getting him back next year."
