Critical of Camera Ticket Process

To The Editor: I recently received a red light ticket in the mail. I went through the process, sent in a letter saying that I did not believe there was sufficient proof of negligence. I received a letter back that I must appear in court to plead my case.

I am a resident of Columbia, Mo., and I took off work to drive down to plead my case. When I arrived the judge did everything he could to talk me into pleading guilty. I did not and instead of listening to my case then, he set a trial date which meant I had to drive down again.

When I arrived yesterday (Tuesday) at the courthouse, Judge Craig Hellmann once again tried to talk me and other red light camera defendants out of pleading our cases. I pled not guilty again and waited two hours, until the very end of the other trials of assaults, not obeying an officer and a dog leash law. When my time finally arrived we watched the video and the video clearly showed three seconds of yellow when the MoDOT standard is four seconds. They pointed out that there was a number 4 in the corner of the screenshot and that was it. I also argued that running a red light is being charged as a "non-moving" violation, and that there is no proof of driver. After all of this which I do not think anyone was listening to or cared to listen to, the judge said OK pay the ticket or take it to the next level of trial. After all this I will be paying the $97 "parking ticket" as they call it and move on.

My point to all this is that I am planning a wedding in your area July 31, 2010, and my fiancee and I were planning on having the wedding in Washington city limits and spending money on decorations, tuxedos, flowers, a dance hall and much more in the city of Washington. After this joke of a trial, and joke of a court system, I will be moving the wedding out of Washington and will not be spending a penny in the city. Thank you for your time. I think the businesses in Washington should know what their city has cost them.

I believe that according to Missouri law, prohibits a person from "entering" a signalized intersection when there is a steady red signal.
I would like to believe that judges would not be able to try to coherse or push people into their pleas.... however...
after seeing this judges name....
I have heard via recording him threaten and force someone to do somethings with false claims of non existant papers... so not having a wedding in washington... good plan... not visiting washington...better one. I hear there will be a book coming soon about this event...
when the event is finally finished. I'm really suprised investigative reporters are not investigating, because if it was my area, I know I would be, but i'm 5 states away and busy with my own news But if the story made it here... you would think someone knows about it there.
its one of the main reasons I watch this papers movement

Now you know how the Washington court works!
Yes, Hellmann is part of the problem. He knows that the entire system used in Washington is unconstitutional but he does his best to support it and pay his own salary. The federal lawsuit on these cameras can't be held off much longer and then we'll be done with them. Hopefully some of the Washington, MO people will be held accountable for what they've done. When they say the word "safety" they really mean "money". No I haven't received a ticket in Washington or anywhere else in over 30 years.

In times of Universal Deceit...
Seeking the truth is a revolutionary act.

Craig Hellmann is a good guy that chooses not to get involved in city politics. I can't say that I blame him.

Dealing with Red Light Cameras after the "facts" is too late. The system is purposely set up to be oppressive. Automated Traffic Systems manipulates the margins irregardless of Calibration tests. The city has no means of authenticating. It's a rubber stamp system that does not reflect well on the City of Washington.

I suspect there is some behind the scenes Quid pro quo that does not serve the interest of the Public Safety of our Community at the minimum. I will refrain from elaborating any further. The tip of the iceberg is ugly enough for this forum.

I would ask you to overlook the smallness of a few people in our community and enjoy the benefits of the greater good that exists here. When sending out your invitations, kindly suggest that your guests enter into town by the outer limit entrances. Avoid the middle.

Don't break the law @V*#&^
Go back to driving 101!! You feel it's OK to run a red light if no one sees me... ??
...Some Council members seem to agree it's OK...as a Washington Tax payer I do NOT agree!!
