The prom was free and open to any area senior 50 years and older. The evening included music, dancing, food and festive decorations.
"Everything went very well and everyone seemed to have a great time," said Brianna Behlman, WHS senior and prom chairman.
"We received a lot of compliments from our guests and that's the best part," she said.
The new location at the middle school gym also seemed to work out well, Behlman said.
"We had no glitches and a lot of volunteers turned out so that helped too," she said.
The theme was "An Evening on Broadway."
The hot buffet was provided by the school district, courtesy of Patients First Health Care. Schulte's Bakery donated the cake and the Lions Club and The Homestead both made monetary donations to help offset costs.
"We really appreciate all of the support we receive for this event," Behlman said.
The seniors came from nursing homes, assisted-living centers and neighboring towns by bus, retirement-center vans and their own vehicles. Some dancers used walkers, canes or wheelchairs.
The event was started to give seniors a chance to relive the excitement of their own proms, and for those who maybe never made it to their prom due to military obligations, work commitments or financial reasons.
"The seniors and kids get all dressed up and just dance the night away," said Behlman.
In 2003, Washington High School won a first-place national award for community-service projects from the National Association of Student Councils for its senior prom.
