Union R-XI School District Patrons re-elected one school board member and voted into office a newcomer to the board in Tuesday's election.

Incumbent Dr. Ron Sohn and Gary Young received the most votes of seven total candidates. Union area native Young, 42, received the most votes with 1,075, or 22.5 percent; Sohn, 59, received 949 votes, or 19.9 percent.

Following is a breakdown of the remainder of the 4,772 total votes cast: Virgil Weideman, 867 votes, or 18.2 percent; Jennifer Slay votes, 709, or 14.9 percent; Traci Canby, 541 votes, or 11.3 percent; Sarah Frederick, 405 votes, or 8.5 percent; and John Pace, 216 votes, or 4.5 percent. There were 10 write-in votes.

Young is an autoworker and student at East Central College. He is married with two children who attend Union public schools.

"My goal is to guarantee that the kids have the best education possible in the public school system," he said. "I want to thank the constituents who backed me and I hope to do justice to their voting."

Young is active in Youth Enjoying Shooting Sports (Y.E.S.S.), Franklin County 4-H, Zion UCC Church and fraternal organizations. He is a Union High School graduate and Linn Tech graduate.

Board members serve three-year terms, and newly elected board members must receive 16 hours of training.

"I hope to get that out of the way and get more up to date," Young added. Sohn served as a Union R-XI assistant superintendent for five years, the principal of Beaufort Elementary for 17 years and currently employed at Westat Research Company. He is married, four children.

"I appreciate the people who voted for me and I hope that I can do a good job for people in the district," Sohn said. "My only platform is do the best for kids and that is first and foremost and try to do my best to do that."

Sohn has served one term on the board. He received a bachelor's degree in education at Southwest Missouri State University, a master's and specialist degree at Southeast Missouri State University and a doctorate at the University of Missouri, Columbia.
