"It's a contemporary, metro, full-service salon," she said.
"We will have two big plasma TVs and there will be a satellite radio playing inside and hopefully outside the salon, which will add to the downtown feel," she said. "The furniture is all from Ikea in Chicago, Ill. It's completely different from any other salon."
Koelling was putting the final touches on the remodeled and newly decorated space Monday.
Trashy Roots will offer haircuts, coloring, perms and chemical straightening for both men and women. Koelling accepts walk-ins and call-aheads. Appointments are preferred but not required.
Koelling also will sell items from the hair product line Aquage as well as hats for young children ages 4 and under in addition to ladies' hats.
The salon will employ six stylists, including Koelling, who has been a cosmetologist for 12 years. The owner currently is looking for two experienced stylists to join her team.
Trashy Roots moved into the building at 1 W. Second St., where Show Me Trophies & Awards and Inscriptions Engraved Gifts used to be located. The trophy shop has moved to 1100 Stafford St., Suite 200.
The decision to locate a hair salon in Downtown Washington was easy for the hairstylist and her family.
"We really like the downtown area," she said. "The building is phenomenal. It has original hardwood floors and the location is great."
Koelling owned a salon in Sullivan called New Wave for about seven years prior to moving to Washington. She and her husband still own the building, which houses a full salon and spa called Revive.
"I knew after we left Sullivan that I wanted to open a hair salon in Washington. The timing was just right and the availability of the building worked out," she said.
