Republican U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt of southwest Missouri will be a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Kit Bond, who announced in January that he plans to retire. Blunt, 59, has been in the House since 1997 and is a former Missouri secretary of state.
Blunt started his political career as county clerk of Greene County from 1973 to 1985. He knows government at all levels-the county, to the state and to the federal. He's been a high school teacher and a college president. Blunt, because of his vast experience, his wide name recognition and his knowledge of the state and its people, will be a formidable candidate.
