Another rare win for the Knights this season came at the end of 2008 at St. Charles West.
Borgia, which has struggled in Vianney's home gyms over the years, was able to take a lead and protect it throughout the game.
"This was a highly contested game," Neier said. "Defensively, they were very aggressive. We had a real tough time finding shots, especially outside. We were fortunate to get a little bit of a lead on them. We tried a little different defense with Sean Duff on the point and that helped to cause some turnovers. They had to play catch-up ball in the second half."
The Knights were able to forge ahead with interior shots. Borgia hit just three shots in seven attempts from beyond the arc as the Griffins worked to shut down Borgia's perimeter game.
Borgia led 11-8 after one quarter and 26-14 at the half. The Knights were up 44-27 after three quarters and weathered a Vianney surge in the final eight minutes.
"They had a great crowd," said Neier. "They were very boisterous. We were glad to see that our kids were up to the challenge of playing a good game there. Everybody contributed."
Junior Nathan Scheer led the Knights with 21 points. He also had six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Junior Tyler Ressel scored 12 points with three assists, two steals and two rebounds.
Senior Chris Unnerstall hit double digits with 10 points to go with three steals, two assists and a rebound.
Senior Michael Dempsey scored eight points and added four assists, two steals and two rebounds.
Senior Eric Kimminau scored six points with two assists, one steal and one rebound.
Senior Sean Duff scored two points and handled the point for the Knights at key times in the second half.
Senior Mac Findeiss had one point with one steal and one rebound.
Senior Sam Cassmeyer pulled down two rebounds.
For Vianney, Mookie Valandra scored 18 points. Joe James had 14 points and nine rebounds. Tony Chocran netted 11 points.
Also scoring for the Griffins were Mel Drady with three points and John Haberberger and Jack Voelker with one point each.
Borgia could see the return of its injured player, sophomore Ben Ruether, for Tuesday's game. Ruether has been released to start practicing again. Prior to his injury, Ruether had earned additional playing time and had even started in some games.
