As far as the playing field is concerned, the Washington Tournament has become one of top eight-team boys basketball tournaments in Missouri. This year's 36th annual event should be a memorable one with the field full of talented teams, coaches and players.

New to the tournament are the Marquette Mustangs, who replace Principia. That addition makes it even a stronger field.

The tournament runs Monday, Jan. 8, through Saturday, Jan. 13, at Washington High School's Blue Jay Gym. Each team is guaranteed three games in the event.

Lafayette is the No. 1 seeded followed by St. Charles, Borgia, Marquette, Westminster, Washington, Jennings and Union.

St. Charles and Borgia tied for the second seed in the original vote by the eight head coaches. To break the tie, the six other head coaches voted for one of the two teams to receive the No. 2 seed.

At the time of the seed meeting Sunday, Dec. 17, six of the eight teams had winning records.

Lafayette was 5-2, St. Charles was 4-3, Borgia was 7-1, Marquette was 5-1, Westminster was 4-1, Washington was 4-3, Jennings was 2-4 and Union was 2-6.

First-round games Monday, Jan. 8, are Lafayette against Union at 6 p.m. followed by Marquette against Westminster at 7:30 p.m.

Opening round action continues Tuesday, Jan. 9, with St. Charles playing Jennings at 6 p.m. followed by Borgia against Washington at 7:30 p.m.

The consolation semifinals run Thursday, Jan. 11. Monday's losers play at 6 p.m. followed by Tuesday's losers at 7:30 p.m.

The championship semifinals are Friday, Jan. 12. Monday's winners play at 6 p.m. followed by Tuesday's winners at 7:30 p.m.

The schedule for Saturday, Jan. 13, is the seventh-place game at 4 p.m. followed by the consolation game at 5:30 p.m., the third-place contest at 7 p.m. and the championship game at 8:30 p.m.
