Final Preparations Being Made For Photojournalism Hall of Fame

Final preparations are being made for the opening of the Missouri Photojournalism Hall of Fame in Washington, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 20. Eight photojournalists from Missouri will be in the first class to be honored in the 4 p.m. program, which will be followed by a reception for them. The Hall will be open to the public at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20.

"The induction program had to be by invitation only due to limited seating in the Hall," Bill Miller, Sr., editor and publisher of The Missourian, said. The Hall is located at No. 8 Second St., in Downtown Washington. The building is generally known as the old Knights of Columbus Hall, and has been used in recent years for other purpose. The older part of the structure dates back to 1855.

The building has undergone some repairs and painting of the interior and exterior. It is owned by the Bank of Washington and is being leased by the Missouri Press Foundation, official sponsor of the Hall of Fame.

It is believed that Missouri is the first state to have a Hall of Fame to recognize photojournalists. Inductees in their careers must have made an impact in Missouri with their work to be eligible for nomination to the Hall of Fame.

The first class of inductees is composed of:

Cliff and Vi Edom, Columbia, and who also lived in southwest Missouri, who worked as a photojournalism team;

Angus McDougall, Columbia;

Bob Briggs, St. Louis;

Jack Zehrt, St. Louis;

Arthur Witman, St. Louis;

Charles Stacey, Salem; and

Betty Love, Springfield.

Only McDougall, Briggs and Zehrt are alive and each plans to attend the induction program. Relatives and representatives of the deceased inductees will accept their plaques.

A plaque of each inductee will be on permanent display in the Hall of Fame.

Most of the photos by the first class of inductees have been obtained, framed and are ready for wall and display boards. A crew from the University of Missouri School of Journalism will be here Thursday to hang the photos and prepare the text to go with them.

Plans call for the photo displays to be changed about every three months. One of the next displays will be the winners in the 2004 Missouri Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest, which has photo categories. Also, in the future, photos taken during two Missouri Photo Workshops in Washington years ago will be displayed. The School of Journalism has a stockpile of outstanding photos that eventually will be displayed. It is anticipated that prize-winning photos from The Associated Press also will be available for display.

The cooperating sponsors of the Hall of Fame include the Washington Missourian, Missouri Press Foundation, Missouri Press Association, University of Missouri School of Journalism, The Associated Press regional office in Kansas City, the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce and its tourism department, Downtown Washington, Inc., Core Restructuring Committee and the city of Washington.

Financial commitments from the sponsors were not sought, but the Chamber donated $3,000 to help pay for display stands and plaques. Seed money has been provided by The Missourian and Miller.

The Hall of Fame committee is composed of David Rees, MU School of Journalism, Cliff Schiappa, regional photo editor, The Associated Press, Doug Crews, executive director of the Missouri Press Association, Walt Luther, president of the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce, Mark Wessels, Washington tourism department and Miller.

Members of the inductee selection committee were Rees, Schiappa and Crews.

Initial plans call for the Hall to be open to the public Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. It also will be open for special tours for schoolchildren and other groups. Details for special tours will be announced later. Volunteers will staff the Hall.
