To The Editor:

It is unfortunate and perhaps ironic that “Washington Resident” will not be attending either of the White Privilege events mentioned in his letter of Nov. 8; unfortunate because he would surely learn something about himself and ironic because the metaphoric check for which he will instead be waiting was delivered to him at birth.

Decision making is a process of choosing from the array of options available. Depending on one’s social or economic status, that list can be very short. Privilege lengthens that list of options.

“Washington Resident” is privileged in ways he may not be aware. If he feels threatened by those who are struggling to attain parity with him by aspiring to those same privileges, I urge him to broaden his viewpoint of himself and his relationship with his neighbors.
