To The Editor:
In less than three months after Missouri voters said loud and clear that state legislators must abide by the Sunshine Law that was passed by almost 70 percent, the Republican-controlled House has now overruled the people’s vote.
What part of “will of the people” don’t Gov. Mike Parson and Republican Sen. Dave Schatz understand? Both would like to repeal the entire “Clean Missouri” constitutional amendment that voters passed in November. What they don’t like is that Clean Missouri would not ensure that Missouri will always be a Republican one-party state.
Voter-approved constitutional amendments aren’t suggestions, they are the law.
Yet, Republican legislators have, over the years, undone the will of the people again and again. Every time they do it, they are showing that they are the boss, not the voters.
The Republicans in the House have decided that they are above the law and Missouri is not a democracy. It’s because of our Republican control of the state Legislature that nationally the state constantly receives an “F” for not respecting the will of the people.
The Republicans in their own statements think that Missourians are not smart enough to know what is best for the state. They think we are fools and will continually vote for them. One Republican in St. Louis County said that they could put the devil on the Republican ticket and win. I believe the devils are already there.
Abraham Lincoln said at Gettysburg: “Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.” It has already perished from Missouri.
The courts need to show those lawmakers who’s boss, and it isn’t them. This rule change must be declared unconstitutional!
Be informed about what is going on in Jefferson City. The Missourian and other newspapers are the best way I keep in touch of what is going on.
