To The Editor:
Dateline Rome: April 27, 1951 Associated Press. “Bishop Sheen Says Reds Entered Seminaries in U.S.”
Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen warned that communists were calling for volunteers to make “great sacrifices of life” to infiltrate Catholic seminaries, target and destroy the authority of the Catholic Church. The church has stood firmly in the path of communism. Bad seeds of heresy and confusion that germinated in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s were well sown and some of these seeds matured into weeds. Bad seeds among the good produced the scandal that came to light in 2001.
Nearly Satan starting in the ’60s targeted everything we valued as a society, especially the nucleus of society, the family. To think Satan’s only target was the ministerial priesthood and that all the apostolic authority has to have been complacent is naive. In Genesis, Satan’s person of contact was Eve. The point of his attack was “can you really trust God?” The idea that it is good to question even the authority of God is Satan’s MO, (modus operandi).
The year 2001 brought to light the scandal and coverup of 1 percent of the church authority.
The 1960s brought a sea of change in women religious communities. The corporal work of mercy evidenced in the work of educating the young and caring for the sick was abandoned for voices of social justice, legislative, political and environmental activism. Eyes were taken off the Creator and focused on the created. Once you take your eyes off God you run the risk of creating new gods and running aground.
The ad lumina visitation of Catholic women religious communities was the next logical step to steer the church back on course. Not all religious communities have lost their way; those orders continue to grow.
The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) has claimed on its website that it represents 80 percent of all women religious communities in the Catholic Church. The new age language of their mission statement can truly confuse the reader. Less confusing and very clear is not only the organization’s choice of women they honor and champion but groups with which they associate and from which they accept funding. George Soros funded Alliance for the Common Good, Center for American Progress, Jubilee USA, Network, Citizens United, the USCCB (which has its share of liberal voices) which are some of the organizations listed on the LCWR website.
This year’s LCWR assembly will be in August in St. Louis. The keynote speaker will be Barbara Marx-Hubbard, heir to the Marx toy fortune and new age author of “The Complete Guide to Channeling” and “Happy Birthday Planet Earth.” She looks forward to the new evolution where “People will either change or die” for “that is the choice.” “If you will not join the global community and its agenda, they will be killed by ‘open-minded’ New Agers.” “This act is as horrible as killing a cancer cell.”
What is this leadership conference thinking? What type of beliefs must your organization espouse to invite someone with these chilling beliefs? Are these shrill voices also not a scandal? It is time to remove those weeds, too.
There has always been need for self-exam in the church. God raised up courageous men and women to reform the church without abandoning the faith. May the work of Catherine of Siena, Francis of Assisi, Bernardine, Clare of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola and Catherine of Genoa spur to reform the church. We must pray for all the church in its self-examination, to accept the offer of fraternal correction and be ever alert for the wolves among us.
