To The Editor:
I have to question the reasoning and justification for many of the letters printed over recent years in this newspaper.
So many are blatantly devoid of facts and obviously bigoted, racist and hurtful. These attitudes are obviously out there, but I cannot see any advantage to legitimizing them in print.
Perhaps I am being naive, but in light of all the recent gun violence in our country, would it not be more productive to make a point to only print letters that are based in fact?
The extremists apparently believe they are entitled to their own facts — they are not. They are entitled to their own opinions, but should not be edged on with their bigotry and hate by having a voice to spew in the local newspaper.
This should also apply to the column writers on the editorial page, who are often guilty of the same attitudes and lack of fact-based premises.
