Senior Health Fair Was Great
By Jerry Brunner, Washington Lions Club, Glaucoma Screening Committee Chairman
The Missourian
To The Editor:
May 18, 2012, the Washington Lions Club participated in the East Central Senior Health Fair and Expo with free vision screenings, focusing on glaucoma and macular degeneration.
I would like to thank everyone involved who helped bring this event to the seniors of Franklin County: East Central College, all the volunteers who worked the stations, Doctors John Crane and Ryan Hill for taking time from their practices to assist in evaluating the test results, all the businesses, churches, senior centers and surrounding Lions clubs for getting the word out to their members, The Missourian that provided excellent articles and last but not least, my committee.
This year we were able to screen 47 people and are happy to report that we did not find anyone with severe eye problems. However, several people were referred to an area eye care physician of their choice for a more extensive eye exam.
The Washington Lions Club is committed to helping people retain their vision by providing amblyopia screening for preschool children and offering vision screening focusing on glaucoma and macular degeneration for people over 40. Both screenings are offered free of charge. We are aware that many people do not have the resources available to schedule yearly eye exams and the Washington Lions Club is happy to offer these services.
We hope that next year we will be able to assist more members of the community.
