To The Editor:

Thank you for publishing the Declaration of Independence in the edition of your paper that immediately preceded July 4. I hope it was read by all your subscribers. After all, it is the reason for the holiday.

I noticed in the document that its authors looked to “...the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God ...” to entitle them to declare their separation from England. Our forefathers declared that all men “... are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights ...”. They appeal to “... the Supreme Judge of the world for their rectitude of our intentions ...” and they relied on “... the protection of Divine Providence ...”.

One can only wonder. If there had been a First Amendment in 1776, would the Freedom From Religion crowd, aided and abetted by the A.C.L.U. have filed a lawsuit demanding that the Declaration of Independence be found unconstitutional?
