To The Editor:
Please support the proposal in SB73, sponsored by Sen. Schaefer (19) and HB594, sponsored by Rep. Cornejo (64): prohibiting the establishment of roadside checkpoints or roadblock patterns based on a particular vehicle type.
The very existence of this program essentially profiles a group of citizens for operating a legal mode of transportation. We should be focusing on programs to instruct motorcyclists on the importance of proper licensing, rider education, and motorcycle awareness campaigns.
These efforts have been proven to do more to prevent motorcycle crashes than mandatory checkpoints to inspect helmets, tailpipes, or other discriminatory practices by singling out such a minority of the community. We implore you to show your support, and encourage you to contact your state representative and senator and request they vote yes to this proposal that is simply defending an unsettling legislative overextension of power.
