To The Editor:

The primary factor in attracting quality employers to Missouri is not tax concessions, rather it is the excellence (or lack thereof) of our public schools, especially at the primary and secondary level. Executives and higher level employees want their children to be well-schooled.

In this regard, we hurt ourselves when we elect Todd Akin-like candidates to the state Legislature, people who not only are hostile to public education, but who also favor the teaching of creationism and who would divert taxpayer money to parochial schools via vouchers and tax credits.

Comes now a new national set of guidelines for the teaching of science prepared by a consortium of 26 states and groups of teachers and science professionals. Missouri is not on this list. What message does this omission send to prospective, out-of-state employers?
