To The Editor:

This letter is about false statements.

In our situation, the false statements are associated with the portion of the Wildcat Building which we own, but it is just as equally applicable to the situations which many of us find ourselves in on a day-to-day basis.

False statements, gossip and rumors can ruin relationships or cause irreparable damage. They are inherently evil and are contrary to what our mothers taught us: If you can’t say something good, don’t say anything at all.

Recently, someone called one of the local radio programs to discuss what made them mad. The initial caller was followed by another caller who made blatantly false statements about why the business known as Bugsy’s was evicted from the Wildcat Building.

The caller claimed that Bugsy’s was being evicted because we, the owners of the applicable portion of the Wildcat Building, were being evicted by the United Bank of Union.

Nothing could be further from the truth. It was our intention to keep the reasons why Bugsy’s was evicted as private as possible, but with the false statement being aired we have no choice but to set the record straight.

Bugsy’s was evicted for a very simple reason: They failed to meet their obligations under their lease. In order to protect our investments, we were left with no alternative but to evict Bugsy’s.

The initial caller was upset because she had a “gift card” to Bugsy’s. As owners of the building, we did not sell or in any way benefit from the sale of any gift cards. All proceeds from the sale of gift cards went to the owner/operator of Bugsy’s. What he did with the money he received from gift cards we don’t know but we certainly did not receive it.

Our goals are the same as they always have been, namely to bring business and vitality to downtown Union. We are working on plans to bring in a new restaurant tenant and other professionals to the Wildcat Building and will be making some exciting announcements soon.

We also now have another goal, to encourage people to not make, either intentionally or unintentionally, false statements.
