To The Editor:

Here in Missouri, buying an adequate lunch for $5 is hard enough to do.

So having a mere $4.56 a day to spend on all of your meals, snacks included, sounds impossible.

For more than 106,000 Missouri citizens who use food stamps, that is what they’re given, $4.56 daily.

Cutting funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which may happen if the farm bill ever passes Congress, will decrease the amount of $4.56 even further and risk one’s access to food stamps.

The U.S. Senate passed a farm bill that cut food stamp funding by $24 billion over 10 years. House Democrats said they planned to vote for this bill, but House Republicans wanted to amend the $24 billion to be $48 billion in food stamp cuts over 10 years. This was an immoral act that would hurt needy people, and few Democrats voted for the amended bill so it did not pass in the House.

Too much of the House’s focus right now is on where cuts can be made, and some members see the farm bill as the perfect place.

However, this is not the place to make cuts.
