To The Editor:

Honor their past sacrifice and contribute to the continuing needs of our veterans on Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27.

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary, volunteers of The American Legion, Legion Riders and Sons of The American Legion will be distributing the familiar red poppies honoring America’s war dead on these days, designated as Poppy Days by the local Auxiliary Unit.

We ask you to wear the poppy in honor of the millions of Americans who willingly served our nation, all too many of whom have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The poppy also honors hospitalized and disabled veterans who make the red, handcrafted crepe paper flowers. The poppy continues to provide financial and therapeutic benefit to those veterans who construct them, as well as benefiting thousands of other veterans and their families by the money collected from poppy distribution.

During World War I, in the battlefields of Belgium, poppies grew wild amid the ravages of war. The overturned soils of battle enabled the poppy seeds to grow and forever serve as a reminder of the bloodshed of war.

We stress, these poppies are not sold. The pennies, dimes, quarters and dollars dropped into the contribution cans enable the local Auxiliary Unit to carry out the programs of aiding the veterans and their families locally and in VA hospitals and veterans homes.

Will you please wear the poppy with pride as a reminder to the American public that the lives given and the sacrifices made by our veterans have made America what it is today, and that you honor their service.
