To The Editor:

I feel that that there is a need for a response to Wednesday’s “Could Have Had a Good Christian Man in Senate” by Kathleen Branson.

Supposing this man actually is a “good Christian,” does that necessarily make him a good legislator?

If Mr. Akin believes in the Constitution, he surely knows that the First Amendment clearly creates a separation between church and state. This amendment is to protect both the state and the church from interference by the other and has been upheld many times by the Supreme Court.

I have difficulty understanding how a “pro-birth” — “anti-science” person can get himself appointed to the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, as Mr. Akin and several others of like mind have. As Daniel Patrick Moynihan has said, “Any person is entitled to his own opinions, but not his own truths.”

I wonder if the writer would mind sharing with us just where she found the “scientific” article which supports Mr. Akin’s views and who the author is.

As to the manner in which women choose to dress, in an ideal situation a woman, if she so chooses, might walk down the street half naked and not be subject to rape. Rape is a crime of violence, not sexual attraction.
