To The Editor:

I want to thank The Missourian for its front-page coverage reminding the citizens of Franklin County that there will be a unique and important Public Service Commission (PSC) hearing at East Central College Tuesday, June 25, at 6 p.m.

The purpose of the hearing is to gather information regarding Ameren’s request for a Certificate of Convenience and Necessity (CCN) from the PSC to dump coal ash in the Labadie Bottoms.

A CCN is issued by the state to the utility to ensure it can provide additional services necessary to the production of energy. It is the first time that a Missouri utility has made this request for a waste dumpsite.

If the PSC does not give Ameren the CCN, it is assumed it cannot proceed with permitting the dumpsite in Labadie and the county regulations would prohibit construction in another location.

Everyone is invited to attend this hearing and to speak out.

We hope all the people who are aware of the health and environmental risks of dumping the dangerous substances in coal ash waste into the Missouri River floodway will make an effort to attend and participate in the June 25 hearing.
