To The Editor:

As a follow-up to the article in The Missourian, I was a part of the Missouri River Clean Up as a member of the team from Kohl’s Department Store in Washington that cleaned up Dundee Road.

I was the one who found the grave marker for Matt Ferguson. Out of curiosity and the need for closure, as I thought a lot about Matt, wondering who he was, etc.

I contacted the Washington Historical Society and talked to a gentleman there. After he heard the name and where I had found it, he was almost sure who it was. Sure enough, he called me back with confirmation of his hunch.

Matt Ferguson did live on Dundee Road, was an African-American who was married to Lallie Ferguson (nee Briggs). He died at the age of 75 years old, and was survived by his wife, sister, Margaret Brown of Mexico, Mo., and nieces and nephews.

Matt is buried at Baltimore Cemetery in New Haven and does have a permanent headstone.

I am still in possession of his temporary grave marker and am having a conflict on what to do with it. I can’t bring myself to throw it away or recycle it.

Any ideas?
