To The Editor:
As I watch the news programs and situation in Charlottesville I have to think our country has lost all common sense. Then I am reminded that common sense is not a tree that grows in everyone’s backyard. My second thought is why aren’t these people working?
The millennial crybaby snowflake generational’s logic is just all fouled up. First of all they haven’t been told “no.” They are pampered. What have they gone through in their history to make them so hateful? They haven’t gone through anything like the Great Depression, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, etc.
No white person alive today ever owned a slave. No black person alive today was ever a slave. These folks need to grow up and move forward. They need to just accept a few harsh realities of history and move forward.
If we are to succumb to the logic of these folks who want to tear down historical monuments then we need to rename the cities of Washington and Jefferson City. They are both named after men who owned slaves. Thomas Jefferson even had a black mistress. Franklin County needs to be renamed because ole Ben Franklin owned slaves too. If you want to take it to another level we need to travel around the world and destroy the ancient pyramids of Egypt and the entire city of Rome because they too were built by slaves.
Slavery is a horrible thing. No man nor woman should ever be subservient to another person. We fought a civil war over it. It is a negative mark on our nation’s history and that is why we must study our history. Not so we can sanitize our history but so we don’t make the same mistakes over and over. Evidently the millennials have not studied their nation’s history.
There is no place in our society and world for groups like the KKK, Black Lives Matter, the neo-Nazis, the anti-LGBT, the anti-Muslims, etc. (to be exact there are a known 917 hate groups in the United States). You are not going to stop them by tearing down historical monuments. Maybe we should blow up Mount Rushmore too?
If we are to blame anyone I tend to blame the “fake news” media who constantly are fanning the flames of racism and misinterpreting what our nation’s leaders say, be they Democrats or Republicans. The media also dreams up new terminology like “Alt-Left” or “Alt-Right.”
Everyone needs to step back and take a deep breath. Let’s all have a little common sense. There is no easy solution to the folks who want to hate. There is a lot of confusion out there and as one leader said . . . “The amount of people that confuse ‘to’ and ‘too’ is ‘two’ damn high.”
