To The Editor:
My letter is in reference to the editorial published in the Jan. 31, 2018, Missourian.
This editorial totally missed the point on the opposition to the Katy Trail. Lawsuits were filed in opposition to the use of the National Trails System Act to steal private property for public use. In 2002 the U.S. Claims Court declared that it is illegal taking of private property and that compensation was due the landowners.
Furthermore, in testifying before a U.S. House committee, those defending the National Trails System Act stated that trails would not exist if they actually had to legally purchase the land.
I noticed The Missourian quotes the First Amendment in defense of its right to free speech. The Fifth Amendment, which protects property rights, is under attack. I suggest to you, the public, that you wake up to the fact that special interest groups are undermining our constitutional rights and that you support organizations like the Missouri Farm Bureau, which are fighting to protect the Constitution.
