The question that keeps making the rounds and is creating an on the street flow of words concerns the rodeo clown who wore an Obama mask at the Missouri State Fair, and the announcer drew laughs when he asked the crowd if they would like to see “Obama run down by a bull.”
There is general agreement that the incident was disrespectful to the office of president. But the question we keep hearing is: “If the president had been white would there have been an issue with the stunt.” Is it because Obama is black that we have the uproar over the stunt?
State Fair officials have banned the clown for life from performing at the annual event.
Talk show hosts often make fun of presidents on a regular basis. They had a field day with Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon when those two presidents were in public hot water for their behavior. We don’t know of any negative hits for the talk show hosts when they poke fun at President Obama. Some of their jokes could be said to be disrespectful to the office of president. But then we all know President Obama has appeared on comedy talk shows that on occasion poke fun at him. Some people are using the freedom of expression right in defending the clown.
There was no immediate reaction from the president about the rodeo incident. He’s been on vacation. He is doing the smart thing by ignoring it.
