The Missouri Main Street organization knows of Washington chiefly because of Downtown Washington Inc. and its work and many activities to preserve the core of the city and make it a viable entity. Special honors have come to Washington through Missouri Main Street.

Mayor Sandy Lucy was honored by being named the Outstanding Public Official. The city’s 175th anniversary celebration received the Outstanding Special Project Award. The awards were presented at the Evening of Excellence awards dinner in Clayton last week. Both Mayor Lucy and the 175th Anniversary celebration entries were by Downtown Washington Inc.

The Missourian joins the community in congratulating Downtown Washington Inc. for its winning entries. Of course, we congratulate the mayor also.

These are deserving awards. Two other entries by Washington reached the semifinals in the judging. They were the Gottfried’s Cabin project (formerly the office for the Downtown Washington group) and the new parking lot along Front Street.

Downtown Washington Inc. has many volunteers who are tireless in their efforts to enliven the core of the city. With these awards, as always, the volunteers share in all awards. They make the awards happen.

Washington is fortunate to have such a capable and active group that cares deeply for the core of the city. Preserving the Downtown post office is one of the organization’s highest achievements. Downtown Washington will live on as a vital element of the city because of the efforts of Downtown Washington Inc.
