The good news is that the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) recognizes the congestion on Highway 47 between Washington and St. Clair, and it is the No. 1 priority in Franklin County.
The bad news is that the state has no funds to widen Highway 47 to four lanes in the foreseeable future.
MoDOT Area Engineer Judy Wagner told the Washington Area Highway and Transportation Committee that there are improvement needs on Interstate 44 in the county, but Highway 47 tops the list when considering congestion problems. She noted the importance of the study underway which will identify safety concerns and solutions. It is important to be ready when safety funding becomes available, Wagner said.
One of the main study areas is the intersection of Highway 47 and Highway 50 in Union.
Unless the General Assembly moves forward on more funding for MoDOT, it looks like a four-lane Highway 47 between Washington and St. Clair is but a dream!
