There has been some talk that the city of Washington’s annexation proposal that will be on the ballots Aug. 5 would be detrimental to farms.

The proposed annexation areas total about 460 acres. City officials estimate that about 160 acres are used for agricultural purposes.

The fact is that city codes permit agricultural use! If annexed, agricultural land can still be used for that purpose.

As long as the landowner wishes to use his property for agricultural purposes, it is permitted under city codes. There are areas in the city now that are zoned agricultural.

To say farms would be impacted by annexation because the owners no longer would be able to use their land for agriculture purposes is false.

The owners of agricultural land in the annexation proposal have nothing to fear.
