We join the rest of the community in saluting VFW Post 2661 on its 75th anniversary.
It’s impossible to measure all the important work the members of our Veterans of Foreign Wars Post have done over the years for local veterans and our community, but suffice it to say it is substantial.
Post 2661 was established on April 8, 1938, and is named after Max W. Mueller, the first Washington soldier killed in action in World War I.
Members of the post have been looking after and advocating on behalf of local veterans ever since.
They have established a legacy of ensuring that those who have protected our country are protected in return.
Over the years, members of the Post have also done an admirable job of keeping the flame of patriotism burning bright in our community.
They serve as members of color guards at community events such as parades, flag-raising ceremonies and at veterans’ funerals.
The organization sponsors the Voice of Democracy speech contest for high school students and teaches children how properly to raise and lower the American flag.
Since its formation, Post 2661 has been a resource for veterans and for our community by helping raise money on countless projects.
One of those projects is the annual Poppy Drive which began in 1939 and has been held around Veterans Day every year since. Many people make donations to the annual Poppy Drive. What many probably don’t realize is that all of the money collected stays right here in Washington to help local veterans in need.
Post 2661 is celebrating its special milestone this weekend during its annual homecoming picnic, which runs through this Saturday, June 15, on the grounds of the post home.
You can show your support and appreciation for the organization by stopping by the picnic and shaking the hand of one of its members. There are plenty of activities and entertainment scheduled for the entire family.
In the meantime, congratulations, Post 2661, on 75 years! You have made our community a better place through your important work and by standing up for veterans.
