Yes, Goal Reached!

The United Way officially ended its 2012 fund-raising campaign in November, falling just short of its $1 million goal. However, as we reported in the Weekend Missourian, recent contributions pushed the total over the record $1 million mark.

The record achievement is a testament to the generosity of the people and businesses in Franklin County and their unwavering support for the United Way. It also is a feather in the hat for Paula Obermark, the longtime executive director of the United Way, who has announced her retirement after 33 years.

Paula wanted her last campaign to be a record and top the $1 million mark. Everyone was a little bit sad that the campaign did not reach its ultimate goal in November. But after recognizing that it was less than $15,000 from the goal, Paula and the United Way board went back to work to see if they could close the gap. Through the help of some anonymous donors, they were successful.

The recent push was the icing on the cake of one of the most tenacious United Way campaign drives ever.

The 20-member volunteer board of community leaders deserve our admiration, respect and congratulations for a sensational campaign. What a fitting way to remember Paula Obermark whose name will always be synonymous with the United Way. Kudos to all involved, especially the donors who helped make this happen.
