One of the design issues for the new Highway 47 bridge over the Missouri River at Washington is parking of vehicles by people who want to walk across the structure. The new bridge will have a pedestrian walkway, and ovelook feature.

The Missouri Highway 47 Bridge Committee is discussing parking along with several other unresolved points.

One suggestion is to put a parking lot on the north side of the bridge, which may be the most practical solution.

One thing is certain: A parking lot will be needed. The walkway attached to the bridge is going to be popular. In fact, it may turn out to be one of the most popular recreational spots in this area. Views of the river will be spectacular. Since it will be on the west side, Downtown Washington will be in view.

It doesn’t make any difference which side of the river the parking is because people will come regardless. The lot should be large enough to park a number of vehicles. The “walkers” are going to come in large numbers. Of course, where the lot is will affect the cost.

This walkway feature of the bridge to some people is more important than the vehicle lanes.
