"Stan’s Span." We like it. It’s appropriate. It would be a fitting tribute to one of the greatest baseball players of all time to name the new bridge over the Mississippi River at St. Louis after Stan Musial.

It would be a tribute not only to Stan The Man’s baseball career with the St. Louis Cardinals, but to his life as a wholesome, humble role model for youth and even adults. He will always be Mr. Baseball in St. Louis. His death at age 92 last week produced an outpouring of praise as his baseball talents and his life off the field were reviewed.

Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois have proposed legislation that would name the bridge the Stan Musial Memorial Bridge. The bridge will carry Interstate 70 traffic. It will open in 2014.

We don’t know why anybody would oppose naming the bridge after Musial. The nearby Illinois baseball fans are members of the Cardinal nation. Sen. McCaskill said people respected Musial. “The respect and devotion that people have for Stan Musial has more to do with his character than his swing,” she said. She praised the values that Musial had. He loved people and life, the senator added.

We don’t know a more fitting name for that bridge. It will be a reminder of The Man. It will rekindle memories of a great man.
