Edward Snowden is on the run. Did he think he was a patriot of sorts when he leaked National Security Agency secrets that he stole when he worked there? He had been hiding out in Hong Kong, but evaded authorities and fled to Moscow. He seeks asylum in Ecuador.

The United States has charged him with being a spy after he leaked to the world documents about top secret surveillance programs. He has been charged with espionage, theft and conversion of government property.

Snowden flew to Hong Kong last month after leaving his job at an NSA facility in Hawaii with a collection of highly classified documents that he took while at work as a system analyst. The leaks have resulted in national and international debates about the powers of the NSA to infringe on the privacy of Americans and foreigners. When Snowden is taken into custody by American agents, if convicted, he may spend the rest of his life in prison.

Why did he do it? Some civil libertarians call him a hero and he may have been looking for some fame with those kind of groups. He said he leaked the information to prompt a public debate about NSA’s surveillance practices. He is being criticized for his involvement with countries such as China, Russia and Ecuador, none of which could be called close friends of the United States.

WikiLeaks, an anti-secrecy group, is doing what it can to help him avoid prosecution.

There is the question as to why a person such as Snowden was hired by NSA to begin with. He’s reported to be a bright individual in the computer world, but he obviously has no loyalty to the United States. We’d bet he’s ignorant of what this country stands for and its other values as to our freedoms and heritage. He appears to be a misguided nerd who is looking for a place in the world of celebrities.

The man is a thief and a threat to the security of the United States.
