Akin Not Visible in County

Todd Akin, Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, has not been visible in Franklin County. He is challenging Sen. Claire McCaskill, Democrat incumbent, who has been in Franklin County several times during this campaign season, including a visit in Union last Saturday.

His lack of attention to Franklin County is surprising because of the number of voters in this county. There are more than 60,000 registered voters in Franklin County.

Also, the Franklin County Republican Central Committee adopted a resolution in support of him early in September after his controversial statements on rape and pregnancies.

There are political operatives and observers who consider Franklin County a swing county with many conservative and moderate voters. The county does have a vocal tea party presence. We have no clear reading on which direction Franklin County voters will “swing” in November.
