We tip our hats to the St. Francis Borgia Lady Knights volleyball team which captured the MSHSAA Class 3 state volleyball championship Saturday.

The Lady Knights (33-3-2) capped off a standout season with an exclamation point by knocking off Carl Junction at the Show-Me Center in Cape Girar deau to claim the state title.

It was an impressive victory in a competitive match that featured a lot of back-and-forth action.

Borgia traveled well and played before a large and enthusiastic crowd which included fans from other schools who cheered the Lady Knights on to victory.

Borgia has a well-deserved reputation as a volleyball powerhouse. It has won 25 of the last 27 district titles, including 16 in a row.

But the Lady Knights haven’t won a state championship since 2004. The longest dry spell in school history ended this weekend as the storied program won its 10th volleyball title in the school’s history.

The 2013 Lady Knights had a lot going for them when the season began, including loads of talent, strong leadership, chemistry and good coaching. But more than anything, this squad was defined by teamwork. Every player on the team understood and accepted their role. They played as a team and they won and lost as a team and that ethos carried them all the way to a state title.

While we are at it, we congratulate the Hermann volleyball team which also won the state championship in its class on Saturday. That makes 12 state titles for the Lady Bearcats, which is now more than any other school in the state.

Winning a state championship is quite an accomplishment. It is an incredibly difficult feat that only happens after a lot of hard work and sweat is expended. It is something that the team members, coaches, parents and fans never forget.

Congratulations, Lady Knights on a well-deserved state cham pionship!
