Mayor Sandy Lucy and members of the Washington Area Highway Transportation Committee were informed Monday of a plan by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) to add wide shoulders to Highway 47 from the north end of the Washington bridge to Highway 94 at Dutzow. The mayor said it all: “This is really good news.”
Adding to the surprise announcement was that work will begin this summer on the project.
The work will pave the way for a bicycle path to the Katy Trail. It won’t be a completed project until the new Highway 47 bridge over the Missouri River is built. The bridge construction is slated to begin in 2017.
It is a harbinger of something good that will benefit many people for many years. Ever since the Katy Trial was built, there has been a yearning to make a connection to Washington and Franklin County. It’s going to be a reality. There will be a bicycle and pedestrian path on the new bridge.
It’s something to look forward to, especially for the bicycle riders, who are growing in numbers.
