Congress doesn’t agree on much these days, whether it’s the name of a bridge or funding for whatever. However, every now and then, there is a compromise.
Take the new bridge at St. Louis that will span the Mississippi River. Missouri lawmakers wanted it to be named after the great St. Louis Cardinal bsseball player, Stan Musial. On the other side of the river, the Illinois lawmakers wanted the name Veterans in honor of all who served in the military. Since no agreement could be reached between lawmakers on both sides of the river, Congress stepped in to make the decsion.
The other day, the U.S. House approved the name, Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge. It still needs Senate approval. The resolution probably will be approved.
Stan Musial did serve in the Navy during World War II so that’s no problem with the name.
Musial died in January at age 92. The new four-lane bridge is expected to open in 2014.
The new name should not offend anybody. It’s a good compromise.
