We all need to wake up to the threat to the United States from the ISIS, which stands for the Iraq and Syria Islamic State, or the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham. It is the most brutal terrorist group in the world and is getting stronger. It has been estimated that the ISIS now controls 35,000 square miles in Syria and Iraq.

This army is becoming more powerful and is recruiting members from Britain, Germany and even the United States, and undoubtedly from other Western countries.

According to Peggy Noonan of The Wall Street Journal, they sell oil and electricity “and empty banks in the areas they seize.” They also make money from kidnappings.

A former Pentagon official told George Packer of the New Yorker magazine: “ISIS now controls a volume of resources and territory unmatchd in the history of the extremist organizations.”

More Americans now are aware of the ISIS because of the beheading of the American journalist, James Foley, who was held captive for about two years before he was killed. The leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghadi, has said that soon ISIS forces will be in direct confrontation with America. Their goal is to fly their black flag over the White House.

We are fighting them now with our air strikes in northern Iraq. However, the ISIS forces now are hiding among the people for safety. The Pentagon has admitted that it is becoming more difficult to target them.

According to Noonan, President Obama has awakened to the ISIS threat — sort of. Initially, he called them the “junior varsity.” Now he has called them a “cancer” that must be cut out. They have murdered Muslims, including Sunni and Shia, by the thousands and target Christians and religious minorities. But President Obama at times indicates he is more worried about his golf game than what is going on in the world.

Noonan is not the only columnist who believes President Obama really doesn’t care about criticism any more. He’s a lame duck and there are no more elections to worry about.

Despite all that is happening in the world, all the threats there are, we are downsizing our military. We should be concerned about that!

On another front, Russia is becoming more aggressive toward Ukraine. Economic sanctions against Russia don’t seem to bother their dictator, Vladimir Putin, who is stronger than ever among his people because of his aggressive military actions.

The warning signs are there. The ISIS wants to strike the United States. We are their target, along with other Western countries. The chances are high they will strike our soil. They must be stopped. Air strikes alone may not stop them.
