There are five candidates for state auditor, but the race has boiled down to incumbent Democrat Nicole Galloway and Republican Saundra McDowell. The other candidates are Libertarian Sean O’Toole, Green Party’s Don Fitz and Jacob Luetkemeyer of the Constitution Party.
Galloway has a good record as state auditor. She was appointed by Gov. Jay Nixon when Auditor Tom Schweich died. She was treasurer of Boone County, is a certified public accountant and certified fraud examiner. She has been fair and competent as state auditor.
She incurred the wrath of the state sheriff’s association, which said she did a poor job in reporting the facts in a report on the sexual offenders’ list. Better communication with sheriffs in the state was needed and we believe she learned from her mistake.
The auditor’s office has been a step in the political ladder in the past. We are unaware of her political ambitions if she has any beyond serving as auditor.
McDowell has had some personal financial problems in the past and lacks the necessary qualifications for the office. She just doesn’t have the experience required to be auditor.
Galloway is the best choice.
