To The Editor:
It is said that America is the most blessed nation on the face of the earth; God blessed our country because it was founded on submission to God. George Washington set the tone for governmental authority when he said, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”
Abraham Lincoln said “God is my witness that it is my constant anxiety and prayers that both myself and this nation be on the Lord’s side.” Benjamin Franklin requested that each day of the Constitutional Convention be opened in prayer saying, “The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see the truth — that God governs in the affairs of men. Without His aid, we shall succeed in the political building no better than the building of Babel.”
Almost six decades ago President Herbert Hoover warned that old things were slipping badly in American life and if they slipped too far, the lights would go out in America. He believed the greatest danger was not from invasion by foreign armies, but rather from “within” by compliance with evil. Among old things he listed “old virtues of religion, faith, integrity, whole truth, honor in public office, economy in government, individual liberty and willingness to sacrifice.”
Poverty or racism does not cause criminal action, it is a moral defect. Think back to former President Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky and our nation’s response to his sexual misconduct during public office. There was perjury, witness tampering, obstruction of justice and a vicious attack on Kenneth Starr, an officer of the court. Some felt that removal from office was too harsh for this criminal lawlessness. There are men in public office who have not been held to the same standards as the general public. For the most part, the courts are not administrating justice.
We have a group of clever politicians who know how to compromise. There is lack of leadership in our political system, crime is rampant, drugs are destroying our country. We legalize destructive behavior. We welcome a group of lobbyists representing self-interest groups rather than the health and welfare of legislative constituents. It is always the mark of a decadent age and the judgment of God when a nation is no longer producing great men.
Throughout our nation’s history, America’s leaders turned to God for guidance. And because they submitted to God’s authority, our nation was blessed. History also tells us that the average life span of all the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years. Each nation followed a sequence from bondage, to spiritual faith, great courage, liberty, abundance, complacency, apathy, dependence and back into bondage. Where is America in this cycle?
The comparison is the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. This great nation’s demise resulted from the wearing away of the dignity and sanctity of the home and the decay of religion. We may be living in a nation that is getting ripe for destruction. Today our heritage of freedom is being challenged by the erosion of our culture. If we continue to throw away the principles that made our nation great, we can hardly expect the blessing of the Almighty God to continue.
America is out of control. We have become a throwaway society. By a decision of Roe v. Wade in 1972 millions of unborn innocents have been legally murdered daily. We are redefining marriage to include same-sex marriage which devalues the institution of marriage. And as if there aren’t enough health issues and expensive via addiction to tobacco, we are now legalizing marijuana.
Evangelical Christians are caving in to societal pressure. The window of opportunity may soon be gone. Don’t wait until it is too late.
